Arizona lawmakers gave final passage to three anti-abortion bills Tuesday afternoon, including one that declares pregnancies in the state begin two weeks before conception.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill to prohibit abortions after the 18th week of pregnancy; a bill to protect doctors from being sued if they withhold health information about a pregnancy that could cause a woman to seek an abortion; and a bill to mandate that how school curriculums address the topic of unwanted pregnancies.
All of the bills passed the Senate and now head to Gov. Jan Brewer (R) for her signature or veto.

I also posted this on my website, but wanted to include it here as well:
I am in Tucson, AZ doing my community health rotation at El Rio’s Birth & Women’s Health Center. I came in to this rotation knowing that I probably would not see very many (if any) births, but yesterday I was fortunate enough to be allowed to sit in on someone’s birth.
It was a truly lovely experience. As I spend more time around birth centers, I have heard it repeatedly mentioned that birth centers are a place where midwives can really practice the art of midwifery. The birth I witnessed yesterday clearly demonstrated this idea in the most beautiful way. Here are some highlights:
*No routine IV placement
*No limit on number of family members present (this mom yesterday had her husband, her son, her sister- and mother- in law and her nephew in there).
*No routine vaginal exams
*Someone else cleans up afterward!
*Mother’s cues were listened to and followed
*All mother/baby vitals were completed wherever mom was at the time (in the bed, on the toilet, standing by the tub)
*Midwife jumped up on the bed to help deliver the baby
*Father caught baby! (with coaching from the midwife)In general, there are three places in which to give birth – at home, in a birth center or at the hospital. Childbirth Connections has a fantastic explanation of each of these options, along with some things for you to think about when choosing a location for your birth.

This is NOT the moment where we make statements like, “Oh, that’s just Arizona. Why don’t people move? What more do you expect? Oh well. *shrugs*.” Because you know who that helps? NO ONE. And you know what that make Arizonans who need/want access to abortion care feel like? Not important.
So, let’s make as much noise as possible. Don’t let this go by without us showing that we see, that we are watching, THAT WE CARE.
SIGNAL BOOST.
[NB: This law will affect more people than just cis women.]

Officials estimate that Arizona has 283,000 illegal immigrants; Illinois’ illegals total 432,000.
Oh they’re European immigrants? I guess we won’t freak out teabagger-style on you then.
Or will we?
Glad to know we have no interest in plugging our budget hole by increasing the tax base.
That is a pretty crazy statistic if you ask me.
