Happy Earth Day, y’all! Hope you took our reminder advice and recycled, planted, composted, used body heat to keep warm…or some combination of those activities;)

If you’ve got some down time after your busy day, this article about birth control and the environment—authored by Kirsten Moore of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project—is, in our humble opinions, well worth the read.

Great fundraiser going on in my hometown of Des Moines,  Iowa. RAYGUN is a popular t-shirt store here that features progressive, satirical designs and they are teaming up with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. They wanted to put their own “spin” on the Rush Limbaugh controversy – all while supporting their favorite women’s health care provider.

All proceeds from the sale will support Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. You can be fashionable and support the work we do!
You can buy a shirt online here - http://raygunsite.com/

The shirt says: Just another slut on birth control. Please pass it on, help PP and get some amazingly awesome shirts out there!

Thanks,

Jessica

I was actually just looking for a shirt with this kind of attitude online last night, but could not find one I liked… this one is perfect. The design looks very cute, simple, powerful, and sleek! I shall be purchasing one. :-) If anyone else has anything like this they’d like me to signal boost, drop me a line and I’ll be more than happy to pass it along as well!

Birth Control 101 by *TomPreston

It sickens me when political pundits ignore medial complexities and progress by turning everything into a black and white “moral” issue. I had the option of using Rush Limaugh (who made the “slut” remark), Foster Friess (who suggested women put aspirin between their legs as a contraceptive), or Rick Santorum (who believes birth control is sinful) as the “heavy” in this comic. Then I remembered Santorum is currently in a position to potentially run my country, and the decision was a no brainer.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, the Pill regulates my endocrine disorder, which caused me to have major depression since menarche. The Pill is literally my anti-depressant.

Also! This would be a mandate on health insurance carriers; tax dollars wouldn’t be paying for it, unless we had universal healthcare.

I think this new focus on informing the female (and male) population about all forms of birth control and safer sex methods is a good change from a condom centered market. It’s great that teens hear about condoms and know that they are easy to acquire, but teens have so many other amazing hormonal birth control options that should also be considered. Why place all the emphasis on getting a new condom that glows in the dark when you can just as easily protect yourself with birth control pills or the patch.

Americans are taking fewer risks when it comes to HIV, a Swedish study puts science behind the use of the pill for period pain, the journal Science recognizes a treatment to reduce the spread of HIV as the 2011 Breakthrough of the Year, a study revealing yet another reason why emergency contraception may be harder to get than it should be, evidence that the HPV vaccine does not actually make young women promiscuous, and more good news about birth control coverage under health reform.
